Can you really cut your own hair at home?

Ask any hairdresser this question, and you’d rather get a reproachful glance instead of an answer. For sure, DIY haircut fails are not fun to fix. Still, many hair bloggers do cut their own hair and get pretty amazing results! Can you repeat their success? The considerations below will let you know for sure.

1. What Is Your Goal Haircut?

Your goal haircut will be decisive when deciding if you can really cut your own hair or not. Obviously, you need much skill to cut your hair into a smart pixie or a trendy wolf cut. What you can do at home is trim your bangs and ends, get some face-framing layers, or shave an undercut with clippers. Needless to say, these changes may be dramatic in terms of your look and hair manageability.

2. What Is Your Hair Type?

The first rule to remember here is that you cut curly hair at home only after it’s dried and styled. Curly hair is much longer when it’s wet and strengthened, so you may go too far with just a small snip.

Thick hair is much more difficult to cut than it seems. If you grab a larger hair chunk, you might need to snip again and again until you cut it and will most likely finish with an uneven cut. Also, a hairdresser will take the weight out of your hair with texturizing shears, which we don’t normally have at home.

If you still want to cut your thick hair on your own, section it well before cutting and get a hidden undercut. The latter is easy to do at home, but it will instantly make your hair much easier to cut and style.

3. Do You Need Just a Cut?

Remember that when you skip a salon visit, you might miss more than just a cut. Each time, a stylist would assess your hair health and advise a change to your hair routine or a reparative treatment if needed. If your hair is not in its best condition, you should better not cut your hair at home.

Lived-In Color

There is a reason why lived-in color has been taking the world by storm the last few years. Who wouldn’t want to balance the sophisticated bedhead with business chic?

So what exactly is lived-in color? It is a way to blend highlights to allow your color to grow naturally. This style is perfect for every color and looks stunning for every occasion.

Pie

It seems as though pastels are coming back to stay in 2022, especially if you are looking for a pop of color this summer. Whether you are just adding a light tint of pink to your hair or mixing a few shades to create a rainbow effect, now is the time to experiment with your look!

Ash Brunette

Ash Brunette is a modern take on the classic brunette hairstyle that blends brown with cooler tones, typically gray. This is a great hairstyle for people who want to have multi-dimensional color and texture while not having too harsh of a look (especially for people with medium complexions).

You can create a smoky look by using dye, an ombre, subtle highlights, or even with just the tips of your hair.

Expensive Blonde

Possibly the most hyped-up hairstyle of Spring 2022 is the expensive blonde look. We know names can deceive, so let’s set one thing straight; the expensive blonde look gets its name from the multi-dimensional look, not a hefty price tag. The best way to describe this look is “sun-kissed, but subtle and chic”.

Professional hairstylist Bradley Leake (https://www.instagram.com/hairbybradleyleake/) shares that “those with a darker complexion will want more of a warm honey tone, while those with a lighter complexion will want to opt for more of a sandy beige or creamy blonde.”

Auburn

There is a lot of debate whether or not Auburn is red or brown, but the best way to think about it is that it’s both, meaning you get the best of both worlds! This means that you will have newfound versatility with your hair.

So what skin tones look good with Auburn hair? Simply put, all of them! If you have a warmer complexion, then go with a warmer look, and if you have a cooler colored complexion, then opt-in for a cooler tone of auburn.

What is Dry Shampoo, and how does it work?

Dry shampoo helps absorb some of the oil in your hair, letting you go longer in between washes. If you are trying to wash your hair less but could do without the oil build-up, this may be a good alternative for you. Just like the traditional shampoo, not all dry shampoos are the same – ingredients matter. Some dry shampoos can give the appearance of clean hair, but their formulas can be drying, leading to damaged hair in the long term. NuMe dry shampoos are formulated with purifying and conditioning ingredients. NuMe’s multipurpose dry shampoos refresh the hair in between washes without over-drying while also providing some texture.

How does dry shampoo work?

Dry shampoo is typically formulated with some type of starch to help absorb the excess oils on the scalp. The most common types used are cornstarch or rice starch.

Types of Dry Shampoo

Dry shampoo comes in many forms, and the type you use will make a difference. For instance, there are powdered, aerosol, and foam varieties. At NuMe, we offer both powder and aerosol dry shampoos.

  • Aerosol Dry Shampoo
  • Dry Shampoo Powder
  • Dry Shampoo Powder

How Long Can You Rely On Dry Shampoo?

This is a question many people ask without getting a clearcut answer. To answer this question, we have to make it clear that while dry shampoo can help you extend the life of your hairstyle in between washes, in no way does it replace real shampoo.

How to stop frizzy hair after washing?

The main reason for frizzy hair after washing is a disrupted cuticle layer, which means, the cuticles are not lying flat as they should be.  When the cuticles are not tight and sealed, humid air penetrates them easily to swell the hair shafts.   Raised cuticles also make the hair strands rough on the outside, causing them to get stuck to each other like velcro. That’s why it’s often challenging to detangle and style your hair after a shower.

Here are some of the main reasons your hair may be frizzy after washing it:

Hot Water

Just like hot steam opens the pores of your skin, hot water swells the hair and strips the natural oils that protect its outer layer leaving your hair feeling dry and brittle. The ideal temperature to wash your hair is 100°F/38°C, just above normal body temperature. So start with warm water, massaging the scalp with shampoo to get rid of dirt and oils, then finish off with a lukewarm or cold water rinse.

Also, if you live in a hard water area, consider getting a hard water shower filter or water softener. A hard water filter effectively draws out all the minerals that would otherwise deposit on your hair and skin, causing buildup and irritation in the long run.

Wrong Shampoo

Most shampoos contain harsh detergents and surfactants (sulfates) that can dry the hair by stripping its protective natural oil.Use A Sulfate-Free Shampoo (Ideally Low pH). If the shampoo is not pH balanced, it will also leave your hair in an alkaline state, which causes the hair shafts to swell and the cuticles to remain open.Shampooing Tip:Use shampoo to cleanse your scalp. Shampoos are not intended to cleanse the hair.

Not Enough Conditioner

Be Generous With Your Conditioner.  A conditioner restores the pH balance of the hair after shampooing, effectively toning down frizz and helping the cuticles to relax.  Apply a generous amount of conditioner to your hair and let it sit for a few minutes.  Conditioner is more important for the hair than shampoo because shampoo is only meant to cleanse the scalp, not the length of the hair.  If you’ve been skipping the conditioner or not applying enough, it could be the reason why your hair is always frizzy after a shower.

Customize your washing routine for your hair type.

Since everyone’s hair type is different, there is no one-size-fits-all shampoo and conditioner for everyone.Find products and washing techniques that work better for your hair type based on your hair porosity and texture. Here are some suggestions:

Blow dry with an Ionic hair dryer.Ionic technology uses indirect heat to dry your hair without leaving statics. Adding a diffuser attachment will help you bring more texture and definition to your hair without any fizziness. If you’re not in a rush, it’s good to give your hair some much-needed relief from heat styling tools by allowing it to air dry naturally.

Seal The Cuticles!  The most important step of all is to seal the hair cuticles after every shower to ensure humid air doesn’t creep in. Use a styling cream or a hair serum designed to lubricate the lengths of the hair, infusing moisture and sealing the outer layer against humidity and heat to prevent frizz.

If you want to stop frizzy hair after shampooing, remember, it all starts in the shower. Not after. What you do with your hair when it’s wet is going to determine how it behaves when it’s dry.

Below are our expert team of stylists’ recommendations for treatments and products!

How to take care of permanent hair extensions?

People say that “good hair isn’t by accident, it’s by appointment.” I say “amazing hair can be achieved through extensions at that appointment.” Extensions can make your hair look instantly fuller and longer. They can drastically change your look and give you the hair of your dreams. As a hair extension expert, I individualize each client’s extension experience based on the client’s hair type and texture. And, when a guest leaves my chair, I want them to be fully aware of how to properly care for their new and improved tresses. If a client has received keratin fusion or tape-ins, then I advise them to not wash their hair for at least 48 hours.

This will allow the glue and tape to adhere and harden correctly, which will extend the installation time. When washing hair with extensions, never use products that contain protein as protein-based shampoos and conditioners will damage the extensions. Also, while washing your hair, only use the pads of your fingertips. Avoid using your nails as they could potentially loosen the extensions or damage your natural hair. Make sure that your hair is fully dried before you go to sleep and preferably braid your hair as both of these tips will help prevent major matting. If you follow these golden rules, then your extensions will have luster, shine, and longevity.

Trending Hairstyles for 2022

Trending hairstyles this season are down and a half up styles with waves and texture. Texture adds fullness and dimension to every shade of hair even if there isn’t much dimension, to begin with. The light bounces off of each section of hair beautifully to create a beautiful look in person and in photos.  Loose Braids, twists, and fishtails are also very popular to incorporate.

What is your best tip for brushing hair for thicker and healthier growth?

There are several tips that can help promote thicker and healthier hair growth through proper hair brushing techniques. The first and most important tip is to use a gentle and appropriate brush for your hair type. For example, those with fine hair should use a soft bristle brush, while those with thick or curly hair should opt for a detangling brush.

Another tip is to start at the ends of your hair and work your way up, gradually detangling any knots as you move toward the roots. This can help prevent breakage and damage to the hair shaft, which can inhibit growth.

Regular brushing is also important for promoting healthy hair growth. This can help distribute natural oils throughout the hair, nourishing the scalp and promoting healthy hair growth. However, over-brushing can actually do more harm than good, so it’s important to find a balance that works for your hair type and needs.

Finally, it’s important to be gentle when brushing your hair, especially when it’s wet. Wet hair is more fragile and prone to breakage, so use a wide-toothed comb or a brush designed specifically for wet hair to avoid damaging your locks.
