Can a VPN protect you from hackers?

Very broadly speaking, most people get “hacked” in three main ways (and frequently, many attacks use one or two or all of these):

1) Hacker succeeds in a social engineering attack – like enticing a user to enter their credentials on a fake website controlled by the attacker.

2) Hacker exploits a vulnerability in software/firmware – perhaps the exploited vulnerability gives control over a user’s device.

3) Hacker manages to install malware on a target system

A VPN cannot provide protection against social engineering attacks. By a stretch, and at best, if the VPN provider’s DNS service provides filtering, then perhaps it could stop a user from connecting to a known malicious site – but the keyword is “known,” as these sites pop up literally every hour. However, this is not what I would call a hugely reliable way of defending against connecting to malicious sites – especially if the user is clicking on malicious links or downloading malicious files.

A VPN is not an effective mitigation against a vulnerability in software (and not at all in vulnerable firmware versions.) For example, being connected to a VPN and running an outdated browser version (or lagging behind browser security updates) offers zero protection against known and possibly active vulnerability exploitation in the outdated browser.

A VPN is simply not valid protection against malware. Connection to a VPN cannot prevent download/install of malware or potentially unwanted programs (PUPs).
