James Hardie Pre-finished Fiber-cement siding and Maintenance-free aluminum decking with glass railings

Oct 2014

We hired 21st Century Building Company to do extensive updating of our lakefront home. We replaced a window, two doors, added HardiePlank siding and replace a large elevated deck. We also had the trim, fascia and gutters replaced. From the very beginning, we knew that David was an experienced professional. He understood what we were looking for and offered suggestions that we had not considered. His crew was very experienced, careful and meticulous. We are very happy with the look of our "new" house and have received many compliments from our neighbors. In particular Ed did a fantastic job on the new LockDry deck and the siding crew did an excellent job on the siding and trim work. We would highly recommend 21st Century Building Company. Custom-Designed and Custom-Built Hardwood, Pre-Finished, Installed Home Office

Jun 2014

Custom, pre-finished hardwood Home Office built-ins are a specialty that few companies can offer with the level of expertise, professionalism, function, and beauty that 21st Century Building Company can offer. Our designs are seamlessly integrated into your home's intended space, with each unit highly customized for you. Many decisions will be made throughout the process of design. Customization of your Home Office, with integration consistent with the design and style of your home, is imperative. Important selections are discussed, such as species of wood, architectural style, architectural details, glass selection, hardware selection, surface treatments, stain finish options, and final sheen coat. Exotic wood species are regularly used for construction, such as Brazilian rosewood, Afromosia, Birds-eye maple, Brazilian cherry, mahogany, knotty hickory, and knotty pine. Door and drawer face materials are solid hardwood with exotic veneers used as practical to match. Perspectives are drawn to show design and details for approval. Client-input edits are made to these drawings and updated perspectives can be presented for final approval. Prior to shop construction, a field visit is made by the hardwood specialty craftsman to your home for exact measurements of the space where the built-in will be installed. The hardwood Home Office unit is custom-built in our woodworking shop, in sections, according to the approved drawings. The sections are then "dry fit" and "assembled" in the shop to double check proper fit of all components into the uniform and seamless design as intended. The "dry fit" sections are then disassembled and prepped for the surface treatments, such as distressing, weathering, or aging. The stain (or paint) process is then spray-coat applied and heat baked in a climate-controlled, dustless, spray booth. The finish is allowed to cure for a minimum of 72 hours before being transported. The sections are then packaged and delivered to the job site for installation. Final accent moldings, such as crown, pilaster, flute, and base moldings will be applied with final on-site assembly. In most cases, the installation is completed in a single day. Electrical and electronic component installations are coordinated for the final installation.

Irv Tobocman 1980 Contemporary Home, James Hardie Replacement Siding Project

Nov 2013

21st Century Building Company recently replaced our siding and flat roofing and did a magnificent job. David Kramer was particularly detailed and made suggestions to maintain the original character and design of the home, which no other contractor we spoke to suggested or proposed. We live in a contemporary-style home designed 35 years ago by Irv Tobocman, a renowned local architect, well known for his forward-thinking, contemporary architectural designs. David, having a close, working relationship with Mr. Tobocman, arranged for Mr. Tobocman himself to come to visit us here at our home to discuss architectural details regarding the new siding and to help us make color decisions. This gave us the confidence that the job would retain Mr. Tobocman's contemporary design esthetic while creating a maintenance-free exterior that will last beyond our lifetime. We've now had the winter to enjoy the beautiful appearance and appreciate the comfort of knowing the James Hardie siding will last for many years. We had no idea what to do with the blistering and warping original mahogany siding. Now the home looks exactly the same as when it was built. Much to our benefit, we've discovered that the siding job, along with the Tyvek house wrap, has lowered our winter heating bill from over $ 300/month to less than $ 200/month! Our accountant asked us to contact 21st Century Building Company to provide documentation for the energy-savings tax credit that is available to homeowners. David provided this information, and we're even getting a tax savings for having replaced the siding. We are going to be hiring 21st Century Building Company for additional work and would gladly discuss our experience with anyone who might be interested in hiring the company. K.B., Bloomfield Twp

Universal Design, Contemporary Master Bathroom with Barrier-Free, Curbless Shower Stall and Freestanding Bathtub

Oct 2013

Contemporary Master Bathroom Project This bathroom features a zero-clearance, curb-less shower with over-sized, 24" x 12" porcelain floor tiles and radiant floor heat, controlled by a digital thermostat. Notice how the Full European shower door lines up perfectly with the floor tile seam, giving the appearance of a seamless flow from bathroom floor to shower floor. 21st Century Building Company, being a Universal Design Certified Remodeler (UDCR) and Aging-In-Place Specialist (CAPS), "barrier-free" principles are utilized in this design and execution of the shower's form and function. The Bain Ultra freestanding, contemporary bathtub is a bubble tub on a custom-built, elevated, 3" tile base, to give the tub a distinct, built-in look. The glass block window, linear run-through shower seat, and linear recessed wall shelves are all functional, as well as contemporary, in design principle. The sink drawer base is an unusual bathroom design because, ordinarily, the plumbing interferes with the drawer function. 21st Century Building Company creatively solved this conflict by designing and executing a custom rebuild of the interior drawer, which allows additional, readily-available storage space, while retaining the clean appearance of a drawer base as a sink vanity cabinet, with built-in feet for a true furniture appearance. Finally, a "water closet" room was built to separate the toilet from the rest of the bathroom, complete with a Panasonic Whisper Ceiling "fart fan" (excuse the contractor speak!)

Full Kitchen Remodeling within a Whole House Remodel Project

Jun 2010

Once I found 21st Century Building Company I was immediately put as ease by their straight forward approach and attention to detail. They were extremely easy to work with and very professional. T.F., Beverly Hills Together, we were able to pick the perfect Pella windows and doors to compliment the overall design scheme of the project. Along with the custom-color James Hardie fiber-cement shingle siding, the installation, workmanship, and final product exceeded all expectations. The whole house remodel included a new kitchen, master bedroom, three bathrooms, family room renovation, basement finish, and a Florida Room addition. We would highly recommend both 21st Century Building Company and their designer Ed to do any size renovation project.
