ADA Bathroom

Mar 2013

When the owners purchased their 1920s bungalow, it was with the intention of aging in place. The health of each, however, deteriorated more quickly than expected and they needed to make their home wheelchair-accessible. When dealing with design challenges, we prioritized by function, then aestheticswe needed to first of all make this bathroom totally wheelchair-accessible. We fitted the shower with bi-foldout swinging shower doors, added an attractive folding shower bench and stylish grab bars and located the shampoo and soap niches within easy reach. The shower also has a separate standing showerhead and hand-shower. We provided access to the toilet for an easy transfer, a bidet seat with a remote toilet flush mechanism and recessed toilet paper storage within reach. The new vanity is reduced to a depth of 12 inches and has a semi-recessed sink. Knee space under the vanity was important, and we also maximized storage with drawers and pullouts. We added a bar faucet with pullout spray, for added flexibility, and replaced the medicine cabinet with a tilting mirror for shaving and putting on makeup. Mobility was a concern, so we lowered the door threshold to create an easier roll into the bathroom, and chose slip-resistant floor tiles in an attractive basket-weave pattern. To improve the safety of the bathroom, the heat register was relocated to the wall to prevent a trip hazard. The bathroom has 100% LED lighting and floor radiant heating for both the main floor and the shower, which keep the room well-lit and comfortable. The owners are delighted with their bathroom that has been redesigned to be accessible, and safe as well as attractive.

Residential Porch

Jul 2012

This dramatic deck in Piedmont was built for a client whose old deck had become rickety and dangerous. They love to entertain outside on warm summer evenings, so they decided that as long as they were going to build a new deck, they wanted one that could accommodate their large, extended family of 20+ people. There were some other requirements: it needed to blend in with the house, and there was a lemon tree that they didnt want to displace. Structurally elaborate with an imposing staircase to the yard below, the new deck is deceptively complex. It has a five-sided landing, and, unlike most stairways, no piece is exactly alike; rather, each had to be custom-cut and fitted. Because the deck and stairs represent part of the homes emergency exit system, the Fire Department required that the deck be made of slow-burning Douglas Fir rather than the popular deck material, Trex, which melts in fires, and which would eliminate the deck and stairs as an escape route. The upper posts and railings are made of cedar, with galvanized steel wire fencing to prevent anyones falling through the railing. The light fixtures were carefully chosen to coordinate with those on the outside of the house. The owners primary goal was to build a deck that was large and functional, but this is also a beautiful structure on which guests invariably comment.

Craftsman Cottage Conversion

May 2011

This residence was a conversion from a nondescript San Francisco row house to an exquisite Green and Green, craftsman-style jewel. It began when the owners bought some craftsman-style furniture. Later, when they began thinking about remodeling their home, they decided that what they really wanted was a house that matched their furniture. The owners began searching the internet to find someone who specialized in the kind of home they began to envision. They found a custom millworker in Southern California who also knew an architect and a cabinetmaker who were specialists in craftsman-style work. While they had reservations about working long-distance, Skype bridged the miles and, happily, the distance proved not to be a problem. The wood throughout this two-bedroom, one-bathroom cottage is African mahogany. We were careful with the stain on the wood because it needed to match the color of the light fixtures. The two skylights are part of the original design, but they were old and rusty, so we repaired them with new materials to let in more light. All of the windows were insulated and replaced. The custom-made kitchen cabinets are cherry, with leaded glass doors. The kitchen has granite countertops and decorative hand-painted tiles in Japanese wood-block designs. The kitchen has a Viking range with a custom hood; the fan is mounted on the roof so the owners dont hear the sounds of the fan when they are cooking. The remodel took 11 months to complete. The owners were fortunate in that their next-door neighbor rented them her house, nearly an exact replica of their own home, for the duration of the projectso their furniture fit perfectly. Project Manager Nancy Madynski asked the owners to not visit the job site during the day, but its hard to stay away when its yours and its right next door! As it turned out, Ted Reite, the foreman on the job who did much of the work, turned to the owner to solicit feedback over the course of the project. Everyone involved in the remodel was committed to making this the exquisite home that it has become.

Customized, Built-in Bathroom

Apr 2011

This bathroom is notable for its customized, built-in, floor-to-ceiling cabinets which provide a significant amount of storage. The soft, earth-toned color palette is accented by the burnt-orange color of the countertop, which is a piece of glass with the color sprayed on the bottom. Custom-made LED lights brighten the room, and the custom-made mirror helps give the illusion of a larger space. The glass tiles of the large shower stall are flush with the dry wall to create a smooth, unbroken effect. The plans for this bathroom also called for a stacked washer and dryer in the hallway, but the owner wanted a ventless dryer, in which all water evaporates instead of being directed to the outside, which requires special permits.
