Sitting high above the famed Sunset strip, this playful modern home uses a series of sweeping arcs to fully capture the dramatic views from the ocean to downtown and the canyons beyond. The client's vision called for a warm design that focused on entertaining at both the grand and intimate scales. Terrazzo floors are used throughout, reinforcing the arcs with their metal dividers, while stone, wood and Venetian plaster surfaces add warmth and texture to the large open spaces. Approaching the house from the Motor Court, guests are greeted by an elegant yet playful composition of modern forms and materials. The gently curved stucco and Italian basalt clad walls provide privacy from the street while engaging the two-story glass stair tower lantern. A backlit bronze screen frames the large glass entry door, giving visitors a front-to-back glimpse of the spectacular city lights in the distance. The downslope site allows for three levels to open up to the rear yard. The long driveway leads guests to the central level with immediate views over the double-height living space below. The circular stair takes them down to the main entertaining level. A long, curved Venetian plaster wall divides the more intimate spaces from the more open, public spaces. The wine bar, theater, spa and service quarters are kept more private, being tucked into the hillside, while the kitchen, great room and dining room enjoy a large open space with operable glass panels leading to the yard beyond. The central level, with two guest suites, provides a nice privacy buffer between the main public spaces and the master suite above. Perched on the third level, the master bedroom, bath and office all have breathtaking views. With retractable glass walls, the inside blends with the outside and the large terrace with comfortable seating groups and a firepit becomes an outdoor living room. Metal screen canopies provide escape from the sun as well as animated light patterns throughout the day. The curve continues as a theme in the landscape, forming garden walls, a sun terrace, and the pool with a spa and baja shelf. Guests can lounge in the covered bar area or gather for dinner at the outdoor kitchen, enjoying the sunset over the LA basin and beyond.
