Callaway Residence

Jan 2010

Marie Callaway approached us to upgrade a very basic, un-exciting set of plans that she and husband John had commissioned for their property in Westminster, Colorado. Time was invested improving volumetric relationships, Tuscan detailing, and relationships between exterior and interior. Principal design work involved detail to complete, at client request, a very Tuscan Italianate design. JKA Design final permit and construction drawings are very precise and aided the subcontractors in this difficult assemblage. Columns, arches, window detail, openings, traffic flow, and dramatic two-story foyer with curved staircase all add to the uniqueness and authenticity of the execution.

ID Russell Residence

Aug 2006

Created for a single gentleman outdoors-man in the boldly rugged terrain of the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, west of the town of Lyons, Colorado, this modern home displays forms as jagged as the mountains that surround it. Although not placed on a particularly steep site, this residence, never-the-less, had to be worked around many rock outcroppings and conifer trees, too large and beautiful to consider moving. Hence the incredible terrain was left totally undisturbed and unspoiled by contemporary landscape.

Additions to North boulder Home

Apr 2006

The original home design had a single patio door facing west to the rear yard. Because the beautifully landscaped property features were mostly to the south and southwest, the clients were not able to take full advantage of their yard and asked us "how to fix it"! We pushed out the rear of the Living Room to become a cozy Den and created a waterproof porch above to allow that window to continue to function for egress, light, ventilation, and view. A large part of the reconstruction is the Ipe deck which wraps around the glazed corner of the new Den and provides seating both built-in and on the integral steps. A barbecue area is also built-into the east end of the new deck.

Sevvom Residence

Jan 2006

80% of the west side of this home was redesigned. Major additions included the kitchen, family room, 2-story study, and a large master bedroom extension. The patio was extended and embellished, and an oversize, highly detailed pergola was installed over a new fire pit.

Southwestern Boulder Contemporary

Jul 2004

8" thick white slump-block walls enclose this spread-out modernist home for an empty-nester couple in North Boulder. This house was originally constructed in 1973 and considered radical for the time. Large glass areas, small blocks of infill frame, and clerestory windows assist with comfort conditioning of the home both summer and winter. In the early 2000's the owners requested a Master Bedroom augmentation to the south with classic beehive fireplace and other southwestern details. The exterior courtyard privacy areas have been maintained and enhanced.

Ankarlo Residence

May 2004

A French country design that takes advantage of prevailing views down Ranch Reserve Ridge by rotating the living room and master bedroom 45 degrees to the northwest while the principal forms of the residence overlook the golf course. The auto court creates owner privacy, dramatically limits the impact for garages, and allows for a remote retreat/guest facility far away from the principal house.

Saurini Residence

Jan 2004

A more contemporary home built in the early days of this Century by Majestic Homes for its CEO, this house enters into a rotunda with prominent spaces flying off this central organizing element. Stairs and second story rooms are open to this two-story space. The feel, especially the kitchen and upper level bridge, is quite modern. In somewhat opposing concept, the exterior is quite compatible with the other, more traditional houses on the street.

Mountain Residence Addition

Jan 2001

This mountain home west of Boulder, Colorado was originally no more than a small cabin with access through the front door and dangerous underpinnings, a kitchen that was far too small, and poor master bedroom facility. All problem areas were addressed, brought up to code, and made extremely sustainable and energy efficient. Winner of a ?CARE Award? from the Denver HBA, the jury was wowed by the clever rehabilitation within a minimum additional square feet.

North Boulder Shingle Style

Aug 1999

On a narrow, previously ignored "un-buildable" property, we designed a new authentic "shingle style" home to literally squeeze out dynamic views of Boulder Colorado. By developing a sawtooth floor plan, virtually all rooms capture fabulous views of Boulder and downrange to Pikes Peak. The tour-de-force is the two-story entry with its dynamic switchback oak staircase!
