Preserve 165

Sep 2013

The Preserve is a Traditional Neighborhood Development in Hoover, Alabama that is designed to look and feel like a turn-of-the-century small Southern town. The Cottage lots are 40' wide with an Alley behind to keep the cars and utilities away from the front door. The homes are located near the front of the lots to create a "street wall" that enhances the pedestrian feel. Then wide porches extend toward the street to make the homes more friendly and inviting. In the middle of the lot, a Courtyard provides outdoor living space, making the home 'live' larger than its footprint. The interior of our homes is usually as open as practical, with unique finishes and special touches.

Helena Home

Sep 2013

This home was designed to be the last home this couple would ever need - everything they need for graceful living is on one floor with a level entry. So why the upper floor? They're still healthy and active, and daily exercise will help them stay that way. So we put a few things that they wanted upstairs, and shortened the stair run to make it easier and safer to get there. The Study Loft is her favorite place, his is the guest Bedroom he uses for an Office with big windows that overlook the valley. And natural light floods the Family Room from above, so they can enjoy it from below. The low-maintenance exterior is carefully detailed with brick, cedar timbers, and hardie-trim, combined with natural wood and stone inside. This home has many energy and water saving features.

Rock Sunroom Addition

Sep 2013

When the homeowners put a pool in their wooded back yard, the old screen porch, deck and back-side siding really bugged them. So we designed an octagonal stone Sunroom with a steel-and-slate deck in their place, and finished the house for them. Below we created a Terrace that overlooks the pool through limestone arches. Now that they have an indoor piece of 'their favorite place', they rarely leave! Square footage includes the 1200 sq ft of porch and terrace.

Entry & Home Office Addition

Sep 2013

This fine home had a great front door that nobody ever used-visitors always came to the back door! So the homeowners' decided to make the 'Friend's Entrance' more attractive and inviting. We extended the roof for a Cooking Porch, with a built-in outdoor Kitchen and it's perfect for entertaining! Then they decided to add a Home Office off the Master Suite. All of this had to look like it belonged on the original home - built with out-of-production non-modular brick! These Additions were skillfully constucted by Harris Coggin Building Co.

High Point Addition

Sep 2013

The homeowners wanted a Sunroom on the back of their '70's home. Their only concern was that the rooms along the back were already dark, and the new Sunroon might block the light farther. We used our expertise with natural light to full advantage, introducing the north light high in the room and using the sloped ceiling to bounce it deep. The result is that the previously dark rooms are 50% brighter than before the Addition!

Ves Trace Renovation

Sep 2013

This home was in a great neighborhood, but it was insensitively designed. The Before picture shows a large brick gable facing the street, the uninviting - and almost unidentifiable - entrance, harsh colors, unadorned windows, and odd brick fins protruding from the wall. Starting with this picture, we studied the home until we got something more appealing! Adding a porch minimizes the gable and makes the entrance more inviting. The arched 'bay' at the Dining Room balances the porch and adds beauty to the interior. Mortar-washing the brick and changing the roof softens the colors. Finally a circular drive and level entry accomodates aging parents.

Kitchen Renovation

Sep 2013

These Homeowners asked for more light in their Kitchen, but we realized the problem wasn't the amount of light but what was happening to the light. The dark finishes (see Before pics) were sucking the light out of the room before they could see it! We rearranged the cherry cabinets to make the Kitchen more open and usable (we added 2 cabinets and finished them to match), and replaced the countertops and floors with light colored stone. In the end we actually reduced the amount of light - we replaced the old fluorescent lights with a ceiling fan, and we added 3 downlights (that are OFF in the pictures) - but look how much brighter the Kitchen is!
