Scharpf Cabin

Oct 2013

The original Scharpf Cabin, on the McKenzie River, was constructed by the patriarch of the Scharpf family in the 1930s as a “temporary” structure. Eighty years later, it had finally outlived its useful life. The next generation of the Scharpf family came to Rainbow Valley to recreate their cabin retreat, aiming to design and build a new cabin that respected the memories and form of the original. To do so, the cabin was sited in the same location; a stone fireplace continued to be the centerpiece of the cabin; and a covered deck was recreated in the same location as the previous one.

Stein Kitchen

Aug 2013

As a sustainability consultant, it was important to the client that her kitchen remodel met her needs and values. The open layout, large island and cozy breakfast nook make this bright kitchen the gathering place of the home. Consistent with a green remodeling approach, the Steins retained their kitchen’s footprint, used regionally sourced materials, and reused everything they could from cabinetry to switch plates. They installed sustainable, formaldehyde-free poplar cabinets, used zero-VOC paint, installed efficient double pane windows chose countertops made of cement and recycled glass that lend a bit of sparkle to this clean design.

Snowhill & Wisbeski Addition

Sep 2011

The low ceilings and confined space of our clients’ original family room felt claustrophobic, especially when entertaining guests. The only existing escape—an uncovered deck outside the family room—was often overexposed to the northwest weather. Our team removed the underutilized deck and constructed a large vaulted sunroom over a new covered patio. Innovative custom steel framing allowed our build team to maximize the number of windows and height of the new sunroom. Tight knot cedar ceilings and decorative walnut inlays offer texture and contrast to the white oak used in the sunroom windows, doors, posts, and flooring. A mantle of antiqued Cambrian Black granite sits atop the stonework of the gas fireplace, marrying old-world feel with modern functionality. This project won the Oregon Remodeler’s Association Outstanding Remodeling Achievement Award for Residential Addition $100K-$250K in 2013.

Perry-Pomranky Outdoor Living Room, Spa & Kitchen

Aug 2011

Our clients’ dream of creating a timeless oasis in their small urban backyard was conceived as a private spa-like retreat fit for year-round outdoor living, cooking, relaxing and entertaining. To create privacy from nearby neighboring homes, we planted mature bamboo around the hot tub and installed custom steel rods for outdoor curtains used to screen off sections of space. The outdoor living room and kitchen sit atop a stained and stamped concrete slab, and are protected by a steel and wood pergola with a polycarbonate roof to let light in but keep rain out. A water-resistant wood was selected for the construction of the outdoor kitchen cabinetry, aesthetic screenings, and hot-tub deck. In the remaining space, a luxurious and low-maintenance “lawn” of sedum and Corsican mint has been planted amidst stamped concrete stepping tones leading to the custom concrete hot tub. This project won the Oregon Remodeler’s Association Outstanding Remodeling Achievement Award for Residential Exterior Specialty, and the National Association of the Remodeling Industry NW Regional Contractor of the Year Award for Residential Exterior under $100K in 2012.

Anderson Mathas Kitchen & Addition

Sep 2010

The owners of this 1948 home felt that their long, low great room and cramped kitchen lacked a sense of elegance, functionality, and a connection to the outdoors. Our team bumped out the south wall and vaulted the ceiling of the kitchen to maximize the height of new windows and expanding floor space. We also created a convenient breakfast bar between the dining room and kitchen, and installed a new hardwood floor, cherry cabinets, laminate counters, and modern lighting features. The ceiling of the great room has also been vaulted, allowing natural light from the new kitchen windows to fill the airy upper space of the new dining area. This project won the Oregon Remodeler’s Association Outstanding Remodeling Achievement Award for Residential Kitchen $40-$80K in 2011.
