Building a Deck

Oct 2014

In this project we built a 4 level deck. The old deck was removed, new joists were installed for the heights two levels. Existing substructure was retained for the lower two levels. In these pictures you get to see the building process at various stages of completion. The design of the deck was determined by the homeowner. The project offered many challenges. Differing planes between the new and old substructures for example. Various handrail designs to meet the needs of the situation. Stairs.. always a challenge to get just right... It turned out beautifully and the homeowner was very pleased.

Tile Repair

Jun 2014

This project illustrates the process of repairing ceramic tile that has been broken. In this commercial setting there were a great number of cracked and broken tile. The cracks appeared chiefly because the tile was laid across an expansion joint in the concrete. The problematic tile is broken out and the area cleaned. The old thin set on the floor must be removed and the area cleaned again. In this way, when new thin set and tile are put into place, the tile will not raise above the existing plane of the floor. The tiles were grouted.. (in the pics the grout is both wet and much cleaner than existing grout... it will dry and take on the rest of the floor color within a few days) The costs on tis project are higher than for residential work. In order to get the project completed in very short order the work performed overnight using multiple folks in our crew.

Hardwood Floor

May 2014

Remove existing carpet from adjoining dining / family rooms. Install hardwood floor. When we removed the carpet we found that the subfloor had significant setteling issues. It was rippled with several high points and some significantly deep valleys. Of course you need a flat surface for wood to that it won't bow, creak, & separate. We had to fill the valleys to bring them to the level of the peaks in order for the wood to lay flat. Successive layers of tar paper was used to achieve this. If you have ever seen a topographic map with concentric rings of elevation... well that's a visual of the tar paper solution. I choose this job to show you because every project will have some un expected twists and the key is being able to overcome the obstacles put in your way to achieve a successful outcome! The magnitude of this problem was not anticipated and it added several hours to the overall project. The beautiful outcome was well worth the struggle!

Drywall Repair

Nov 2013

A comercial location had water penetrate the window ledge causing drywall damage. Our task was to remove the damaged material and make it pretty again. A bit of skilled drywall repair was needed. We actually do a lot of small drywall repairs to holes that somehow appear in walls. It only takes a couple visits and you would never know there was ever a problem.... of course we can't help with the anger management issues that may be present.

Tile with Borders

Oct 2012

In this project we demonstrate tiling a floor using two different borders as well as angled field tile. (we also get a bit of help form a couple friends!) The subfloor was wood so a concrete backer board was installed first. Then the large border followed by the small 1x2's. Finally the angled field tile was set into place. Angle cuts are more time consuming to install than a square pattern. They also involve more waste... so plan your project accordingly. The angle look does make a beautifully statement on the floor! We had to move some furniture around as we set the tile and prepared to grout... which is why, in some shots, there appears to be furniture legs on un grouted tile! Overall the project turned out wonderfully and the customer was very happy with their new floor.
