There were multiple goals with this remodel starting with; temperature retention, sound control, esthetics. The temperature control the previous walls, were installed on wood strips ¾” thick without insulation behind the drywall. Second was the sound control, since the ceiling was also the living room floor any walking upstairs resonated downstairs, and vice versa with any sounds in the basement. Thirdly was the esthetics of the basement having no finished ceiling with a gloomy dark ceiling. The solution was to remove the existing walls down to the cement block walls, clean them and applying a fresh coat of waterproofing sealer. Build a new 2” x 4” wall spaced 1” away from the block wall using pressure treated lumber to have room to install the insulation. Using an open cell spray foam on the 3 exterior walls filling the entire wall cavities and partially filling the ceiling cavities. Foaming the exterior walls was for temperature control, the ceiling was for temperature and sound control. By spacing the new walls away we achieved an R-17 / R-18, the City of Asheville requires an R-15 on walls below ground. Once the foaming was done, we added an additional R-13 faced fiberglass batting to the ceiling for additional sound control. Drywall, priming and painting came next along with a 5/16” snap together strip vinyl flooring, and baseboard. To sum up the project all of the goals were achieved or surpassed, the home owners were very pleased with the results, and there was a great feeling of accomplishment on my part.

BASEMENT BEDROOM & BATHROOM ADDITION Bathroom remodels are second to none of the other home remodels in cost per square foot to do. But bathroom remodels provide the top money returns on your investment (R.O.I.), along with being one of the top things buyers look at in a house, once they have chosen a neighborhood. This remodel was made complicated due to the fact that the concrete slab had to be cut to attach the sewage lines; along with removing parts of the walls and ceiling to gain access to existing water lines. Also there was a complete new design layout taking one wall down and expanding the room a converting it into a bedroom. There was a dividing wall added to divide another room and adding a large closet to the bedroom and bathroom addition. The existing wood double door was changed over to a full double pane, low-E coating, gas filled, French Door with mullions. Above the door there was a fixed window added, for this there was some structural work that needed to be done, a 2” x 12” header was installed above the window to take the load off of it once the framing was removed. Venting going outside needed to be added for the new bathroom, along with all new lighting and a radiant floor heat system was added under the new ceramic tile floor, a wooden floor matching the adjoining rooms was installed in the bedroom area. Matching multi-tiered crown molding was added to match the existing crown molding.

Completely gutted and remodeled the entire kitchen, along with rearranging where the appliances are and installing an exterior vent to the stove hood. In removing the old kitchen, we found rotted wood on the entire exterior wall. The wall was hanging approximately 18 inches in mid-air have to be braced so it would not cave-in. We had to escalate pour a new foundation on the exterior portion of the wall, build the foundation wall above it. The entire bottom plate of the wall was rotted have to be removed and rebuilt. Because it was a log cabin the chinking between the logs let a tremendous amount of airflow from the exterior. To remedy the gaps, high density foam was sprayed on the entire exterior wall one inch thick given it an R7+. On top of that we installed fiberglass insulation. Then it was covered with drywall. A new sub-floor was installed, some walls were closed off and some walls were installed. At the end the entire footprint of the kitchen was changed.

This finished product, comes from a bath I had to be completely gut right down to the stud walls. The floor below the tub and vanity was one big hole. All of the floor had to be removed and replaced, along with the floor joists, Upon arrival, the vanity cabinets, had 4 damaged doors which had to be replaced. With two of the damaged doors, I fabricated the trim, that borders the other two doors that were salvaged creating The custom tub front that serves as access openings to access the Jacuzzi motor and faucet plumbing.

Reclaiming 90 year old wood flooring, it was not sanded so that it would keep it's charm and aged look. We de-nailing it, cleaning the tongue and groove, installation of rubber sound proofing, installation of new sub-floor, installation of re-claimed wood, de-waxing it after it was installed, applying multiple coats of satin finish
