Eric Akers is the owner of Golden Brush LLC. Golden Brush painted at least 4 homes in the Sabino Mountain HOA during 2016. Four years later, four homes have developed cracking and streaking discoloration, but Eric refused to honor his 7-year warranty on any of these homes, including mine. He is guilty of numerous cons and scams. I experienced each of these first hand: Con #1 – "Asks for More Money Than He Bid" Scam When Eric came to collect his final payment the day his crew finished, he asked me for $875 more than he had bid. He claimed his office manager made a mistake and that I owed more. I refused to pay. He then very quickly changed his story and said that his crew used a lot more paint than he had estimated. I felt sorry for him and paid him an additional $400 dollars more than he bid. That was a big mistake. As a member of our HOA Finance Committee, I later learned that Eric did the same thing when he requested payment from our HOA manager for a stucco wall painted by Golden Brush. Con #2 – Periodic Inspections Scam Eric's bid stated, “All exterior stucco surfaces will be guaranteed for a 7 year period with periodical inspections and refinishing of any needed areas.” No periodic inspections were ever performed by Eric Akers or Golden Brush. When painting a neighbor's house about one year after my house, he sent two employees to my house and they caulked some (but not all) cracks that I had pointed out to them. When I asked Eric to repair and repaint some areas 2 years after my home was painted by Golden Brush, no more work was ever done. Periodic inspections are something Eric promises, but he does not do them. Con #3 - Unprofessional Behavior and Lying Four years and 3 months after Golden Brush painted my house, it failed the HOA paint inspection due to streaking discoloration. After I informed Eric that I had to make a warranty claim, he ignored me and / or made every excuse in the book why he was too busy to meet with me. This went on for 2 and one-half months. Two hours before he was scheduled to meet me at my house, he canceled the meeting (via email). He told me my house had “structural problems”, and he told me to file a complaint with the Registrar of Contractors (ROC). I obtained bids from 3 other licensed paint contractors in 2020 to repaint my house. Each told me my house had “no structural problems”. So Eric definitely lied about that. They said the house failed the HOA inspection because of poor crack repairs, poor paint application, and low quality paint. Con #4 – The ROC Scam I filed a complaint with the ROC, and received a dismissal letter because their statute of limitations is only 2 years from when the work was completed. No doubt, Eric knew this when he told me to file my complaint with the ROC. Con #5 – The Cheap, Low Quality Paint Scam Eric used Dunn-Edwards Acri-Hues paint on my stucco house. All 3 of his competitors, who bid in 2020, use Dunn-Edwards Evershield paint, which is an ultra-premium paint that is two grades higher in quality than the paint used by Golden Brush. (This can be confirmed on the Dunn-Edwards web site.) I called their retail store on Speedway, and the rep told me they do not recommend Acri-Hues for residential use! It is their lowest quality paint. Eric uses the lowest quality paint and charges a premium price. Con# 6 – The Water Sealer Additive Scam Eric claims he adds a water proof sealer to the paint at a 1:5 ratio. He claims that it “aids in longevity of the finished surface”. Who knows if he actually adds anything (or if he dilutes the paint with water or some other low cost additive), but considering his paint job failed inspection after a little more than only 4 years, it clearly does not work as claimed. It only serves to dilute the paint quality and increase his profit margin. Con #7 – The 7-Year Warranty Scam Eric offers a 7 year warranty, using low quality, diluted paint that is not capable of lasting 7 years. He knows that any ROC complaints are limited to only 2 years. He has no intention of honoring his 7 year warranty. In practice, his warranty is only 2 years, because after that term, he knows the ROC will not issue a citation against him.
