I have purchased a hardware mount baby safety gate for the top of the stairs. It is a challenge because the 1/2 baseboard comes into play for the lower mounting brackets. But the upper mounting brackets will go into drywall (if I cant find a stud) - and of course the upper dimension is wider since there arent the two 1/2 baseboards. Also the manufacturer is adamant that it should never be installed into drywall (I had considered drywall anchors but I dont want to risk it.)
