Project Q&A with the homeowner and pro

What was the homeowner's main goal or motivation for doing this project?

Phil Kean Designs

Phil Kean Designs This is a home I designed for myself. Everybody said not to do modern, so I just had to do modern. I wanted to design a house that showcased modern as something that was warm, wonderful and spa-like. It pays homage to the history of the midcentury modern designers. It feels right for me because it's not trying to look old world. It's not trying to be something that it's not.

How long did this project take?

Phil Kean Designs

Phil Kean Designs Project Duration: 9-10 months Design: 2 months Building Permits: 3 weeks Construction: 7 months

How big is the space?

What are some of the key materials you used?

Phil Kean Designs

Phil Kean Designs I used natural wood quartz stack stone on the inside and outside. I used Ipe lumber—a Brazilian hardwood—on the floors and used mostly natural earth tone colors.

What was your biggest challenge and/or biggest takeaway working on this project?

Phil Kean Designs

Phil Kean Designs The site sloped pretty steeply, which was a challenge. I built it in seven months to beat my deadline, which meant if something wasn't available when I needed it I had to go with something else.

What's your favorite part of the new space?

Phil Kean Designs

Phil Kean Designs I love the indoors-outdoor flavor of it. It's one of my favorite houses I've ever done.
