Preparing for Baby Checklist

All the things you need to do to prepare your home for the arrival of your little one

Making expanding your family easier

Choose a location for baby's room
  • Give careful consideration to whether you prefer the baby's room near your bedroom for feeding convenience or a little further away so everyone is more likely to be well-rested for work the next day. Other factors to consider: lighting, noise, temperature, and general space
Decorating baby's room
  • Start with the basics like a crib, changing table, dresser, and rocking chair
  • Try not to overcrowd the room with baby stuff before your little one arrives
  • Consider new interior paint to update the space
Give your house a safety exam
  • Get a start on baby-proofing by ensuring cleaning products and medication are stored out of sight and out of reach
  • Use magnetic locks on cabinets and safety locks on windows
  • Check or install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
Get organized
  • Make room in your fridge for your baby's all-liquid diet, plus those delicious casseroles that friends and family will bring when they visit
  • Re-evaluate your laundry hamper - upgrade to make laundry easy when baby arrives
Do a deep clean
  • Clean floors and carpets in preparation for your new arrival
  • Eliminate germs and sanitize kitchen and bathrooms
  • Consider hiring a cleaning service for the first few months
Purchase and learn how to use a federally approved car seat
  • Most hospitals will not discharge your baby if you do not have a car seat. Make sure to purchase in advance and that both you and your partner know how to use it
  • Hot tip: most fire departments are happy to help you install and check the safety on car seats
Spend quality time with your significant other
  • Relish in the moment that your life is about to change significantly
