Brentwood

Apr 2012

A returning client sought our help with a 1957, Oakland, CA ranch house. Elegant bamboo cabinets took the place of beige laminate, while handmade ceramic tiles and crisp white stone countertops complete the handsome modern kitchen. A custom designed dining table is joined with vintage Scandinavian chairs and sculptural lighting to create a balanced interior, reflective of the owner's own elegant and refined nature.

Spruce St. Cottage

Jun 2010

This new "guest house in the garden" is an inviting cottage that doubles as a retreat for a busy mom of three. Set at the back of a deep yard, the structure provides a sense of enclosure. The exposed beams, wood siding and detailed moldings have a timeless charm while the sleeping loft maximizes the sense of space. An adjacent hot tub and sauna nestled in the landscaped garden complete this delightful destination.

Hilltop

Jun 2010

Our clients, a poet and attorney, inherited this home on the Piedmont, CA border and wanted to modernize without losing the home's traditional character. The house was stripped to its studs and received all new mechanical, electrical, plumbing, windows, doors, a seismic retrofit and rooftop solar. Views of the vast landscaped gardens and of San Francisco Bay were framed to connect the home to its surroundings.

Southampton

Apr 2010

Taking advantage of a light-filled central courtyard was essential to re-thinking the layout of this expansive mid-century home in the hills of Berkeley, CA. By minimizing the distinction between indoor and outdoor, we created new spaces filled with warmth, light and framed views. A significant seismic retrofit was carefully integrated into the design and allowed us to accommodate large expanses of glass.

Sunnyhills

Jan 2009

Originally built in the 1920's, this traditional Oakland, CA home was prime for re-thinking. The clients, both designers, had a strong sense of what the home could become and helped envision a more open floor plan. The existing kitchen, pantry and family rooms were combined to create an expansive kitchen and dining area with French doors leading to a terrace overlooking the garden. Even on the foggiest Bay Area days, this spacious room is filled with vibrant color and light.

Oakes

Jun 2008

This simple East Bay, CA home, built in the 1940s, received a clean, modern update. The design was inspired by an Asian sensibility, incorporating horizontal lines of a traditional Tansu cabinet. In the kitchen, amber strand bamboo and applied mouldings helped reinforce the feel. Daylighting was enhanced with the addition of a skylight situated above the main workspace.

Chimney Creek

Mar 2008

This new home and family retreat is nestled in the foothills of the Soldier Mountains on Chimney Creek in Northern Idaho. An adaptable plan provides comfort for the single resident while easily accommodating extended family visits. In the warmer months a wrap-around porch offers views of lush meadows and grazing cattle. In winter, the house glows like a beacon in drifts of snow.
