Heather and Vanessa from At the Picket Fence, answered all of our quirky questions (well, 16 of them at least) revealing everything from their worst DIY fail, to their secret stash of Pellegrino bottles.
What’s your DIY weapon of choice? A compound miter saw and a hot glue gun. We go from one extreme to the other in the DIY world!
If your walls could only be painted one color for the rest of your life, what color would they be and why? Sherwin Williams Rice Grain. I would love to repaint my entire home in this color.
What are 3 words to describe your blog? Inspiring, Encouraging, Uplifting
Tell us about a time when you had a DIY fail (we’ve all had them!) Just one? There have been so many! One time I was trying to make a Valentine’s day craft and the entire thing ended up dumped in the trash while I muttered things under my breath that were definitely not reflective of the loving nature of that special day.
How did you name your blog? When we started our blog, we had a vision of a community coming together. Of people stepping outside their homes and meeting where their picket fence connected to the next person’s picket fence and so on. Standing with coffee (or tea) cups in hand and just investing in each other’s lives. We truly hope that we offer that feeling of connection on our blog and that everyone feels incredibly welcomed!
Strangest decoration in your house? My kids like to play ‘hotel’ so all of the doors in our home currently have pieces of paper taped to them with room numbers and descriptions of each space. There are also currently Lego® and PlayMobil® figures strategically placed in some of my fall decor.
Hardest part about blogging? All of the behind the scenes responsibilities and keeping up with the business side of it.
Best part about blogging? We never imagined that we would develop such amazing friendships with other bloggers and that many would become like family to us. And the relationships we have developed with our readers too are such a blessing. Of course, getting to work with amazing brands and companies, trying new products, having our work featured in magazines and websites such as Porch, speaking at conferences and all of the other opportunities that have come along as a result of blogging still blows us away. We absolutely love what we do!
If your life were a song, what would it be? Hmmmm….maybe “Welcome to the Jungle” by Guns-n-Roses? Haha! Seriously though our lives are so busy and crazy but we wouldn’t trade it for anything!
Pinterest or Facebook? That’s like asking us which of our children we like better! An impossible choice!
Last thing you ordered on Amazon? Books for my kids and gift cards
What are you exceptionally good at? (Permission to brag) Yikes! We are definitely not good at bragging on ourselves. But, if we HAVE to choose something we would say that we are pretty good at encouraging others. Our hearts desire is that after spending time around us or on our blog that they will come away feeling better about themselves and supported on their own journey.
What’s the weirdest thing you’ve collected? I have a surprisingly large collection of Pellegrino bottles that I’m so certain I will be able to come up with something amazingly creative to do with them and yet there they sit on the shelf collecting dust. We also tend to hoard our craft supplies which means there is quite an odd assortment of leftovers and scraps.
Funniest comment you’ve received on your blog? The spam comments are definitely the funniest (and the most annoying!). They are so strange and random that we find ourselves laughing out loud at them!
What’s a home trend you hope doesn’t exist in 100 years? Feeling the need to paint every single piece of furniture. Some pieces are just meant to be left in their original state.
Favorite words to live by? “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” Proverbs 4:23
