The gas supply pipe (into the side of the fireplace above ground) has evidently has a water leak. Where the piping enters the fireplace inside, the concrete around the piping appears to be pushed inwards toward the pilot light. Outside, the caulk surrounding the entry pipe has weathered and pulled away in a few small spots allowing any rain to drain into those openings - later freezing inside the chimney.
