Manhattan Penthouse

Sep 2013

The prewar Osborne Building is a landmarked residential structure near Caregie Hall and is one of the sought-after residential locations in Manhattan. With original details by the likes of LaFarge, St Gaudens and Tiffany, the grand entrance foyer is a statement of the most exquisite extravagance of a late 19th-century Victorian-Byzantine style. A principal focus of the renovation, however, was to feature and accentuate the family's notable French art collection that had been collected over many years, which included works by Leger, Rouault, Lorjou and Picasso, as well as a Klee and a Stuart Davis, among others. In keeping with the generally French theme of the project, the architects sought to fastidiously restore all the original wooden floors, which finally reminded the owners of traditional Parisian apartments, and to infuse color and texture, to enliven the sequence of spaces. In addition, the beautiful moldings and other architectural detail were restored or newly created to complement remodeled spaces.

Scarsdale Residence

Jan 2009

The new home is an updated version of a shingle-style design. To avoid becoming an ostentatious "McMansion", most of the additional area was accommodated within newly-created attic spaces and dormer roof forms rather than in a true second floor. An elongated roof monitor, a semi-circular clerestory and a pair of octagonal cupolas are used to break up and articulate the expanse of roof as well as to illuminate the main circulation spaces within the house. A new protruding entrance porch, book-ended by two similar gable ended bays, leads to the Foyer and Stair Hall. This brightly lit space, the nucleus of the house at both levels, receives daylight from both the monitor and semi-circular clerestory.
