About Second Century Homes, LLC
Second Century Homes specializes in the renovation and restoration of homes and properties over 100 years old. When finished, our work will enable the home or property to provide another 100 years of shelter and service to it's owners or residents. We can restore wood windows, wood doors, and just about anything inside the home, including textured wallpaper (like anaglypta and lincrusta), wood stairs, plaster and lathe walls, hardwood floors and custom casework. We also provide design and build services using 3-D CAD software for total renovation projects (full gut) and demolition services when needed. We offer unique services such as cataloging and photographing historic characteristics of a room before renovation to ensure total matching of old and new materials, and green remodeling that recycles materials generated during the demolition process back into the renovated structure. We fully embrace energy efficiency standards (such as LEED and USGBC) and materials, including photovoltaic (solar) and radiant floor heating. We can offer alternative approaches to traditional methods of heating and cooling such as geothermal and mini-split units. We give back to the community through a variety of in-kind skilled services donations exceeding several thousand dollars per year. This includes serving on the Board of Directors of "Rebuilding Together Baltimore", a local non-profit that provides free repair services to elderly and disabled homeowners, working as a skilled volunteer for Rebuilding Together Baltimore, and presenting free semi-monthly home repair workshops at "The Loading Dock", a local non-profit reclaimed materials warehouse. As a Maryland MHIC contractor we are licensed and insured. We also know how to run projects on-time and on-budget. Senior members of the company have been certified as Professional Project Managers by the Project Management Institute since 1998. Our work reflects our belief that doing things right takes time, often more time than expected, due to the unknowns that are common to older homes. But if it takes another week to properly finish a project that will last 100 years instead of another 10 years, we think it is worth the extra effort and investment. I could not have asked for a better experience. Lawrence contacted me the same day Porch sent out my request. The access hatch he and his carpenter installed in my living room floor is barely noticeable. They were extremely diligent and made sure to do everything they could to install a hatch that was as invisible as possible. Even when a minor problem occurred they were able to promptly trouble shot the issue. It was less than one week between putting in my request and having my project complete, talk about quick turn around! I will definitely be using his services in the future.

  | Central Ave Roasting Company | Oct 2014 | A coffee roasting company was expanding rapidly and wanted to occupy first floor space close to their customers. They purchased a 120 year old warehouse and selected Second Century Homes to gut and renovate the commerical space to meet their specialized needs as both a kitchen and business office. All existing mechancial systems were removed and replaced with state of the art energy efficient systems for heating, cooling and hot water generation. A new concrete floor was poured, and new 14 foot fire rated walls were built, along with a bead board ceiling and ADA compliant bathroom. One specialized aspect of the project required two insulated furnace flues for the roasting machine that ran 50 feet from the ground to the third story roof. | $100k | Baltimore, MD |
  | Custom Tile Shower on Barclay Street | Jan 2013 | The owner of a 1920's classic rowhouse in the Abel neighborhood requested the demolition of a plastic shower liner, and replacement with custom Italian tile in three sizes and colors. The odd size of the shower space required cutting over 200 different pieces of tile to minimize visible differences in wall length and ceiling height. | $3k | Baltimore, MD |
  | Bolton Street Wood Windows | Jan 2013 | This 100 year old rowhouse faced west, and the third story windows suffered considerable weather and sun damage from decades of exposure. The owner wanted to save the historical glass from the windows and place it into new and exact reproductions of the old windows. Their wish was supported through gentle removal and installation into brand new, Spanish Cedar windows that were properly primed and painted with oil based paint.
