A modern screen porch beautifully links this Wellesley home to its Garden. Extending overhangs that are clad in red cedar emphasize the indoor / outdoor connection and keep direct sun out of the interior. The grey granite floor pavers extend seamlessly from the inside to the outside. A custom designed steel truss with stainless steel cable supports the roof. This remodel of a mid century gem is located in the town of Lincoln, MA, a hot bed of modernist homes inspired by Walter Gropius' own house built nearby in the 1940s. Flavin Architects updated the design by opening up the kitchen and living room. Spectacular exposed beams were lightened with a light grey stain and the floor was finished in a dark grey cerused oak stain. The low pitched roofs, open floor plan, and large windows openings connect the house to nature to make the most of its rural setting.

A Modern Guest House and swimming pool are located where the granite ledge of Gloucester Harbor meet the manicured grounds of this private residence. The modest-sized building is an overachiever, with its soaring roof and glass walls striking a modern counterpoint to the property's century-old shingle style home. The building is clad with red cedar, finished in clear and full body stains. The doors and windows are clad in black aluminum and are manufactured by Loewen. The flashing details are copper.

A growing family was bursting at the seams in their Lincoln Colonial Farmhouse. The existing kitchen was dark and had no dining area. We added a sunny dining nook to the kitchen. Its three walls of glass and walk out deck connect the house to nature. Dramatic overhangs shade the room from the summer's sun, and Japanese style chains direct the roof runoff to drywells.

Modern glass house set in the landscape evokes a midcentury vibe. A modern gas fireplace divides the living area with a polished concrete floor from the greenhouse with a gravel floor. The frame is painted steel with aluminum sliding glass door. The front features a green roof with native grasses and the rear is covered with a glass roof. Flavin designed a modern deck addition on the rooftop of a Brookline row house. A perimeter trellis frames the sky and distant view, neatly defining the living space while maintaining an intimate feel. Steel and glass staircase gives the top floor of this row house a loft-like feel and creates access to the deck. The roof decking and trellis are built of mahogany. The penthouse is clad in cement panels, painted a dark grey.

A neglected Colonial Revival house in Rockport was transformed into a captivating summer home. The first floor was lowered to open up a cramped interior and the ocean side was opened with glass to bring the dramatic seascape into their daily lives. Located in Boston's South End, this traditional rowhouse facade screens a modern makeover of the interior. An open riser staircase with glass landings ties five levels together and allows light to filter down and play against red Venetian plaster walls.
