Project Q&A with the homeowner and pro

What was the homeowner's main goal or motivation for doing this project?

Matthew Mckelligon Design

Matthew Mckelligon Design The house did not connect very well with the backyard. We remolded the kitchen and the entry room to better fit with the yard and added a pool and spa. The homeowners wanted a comfortable space to enjoy the backyard area, where they could have an extension from indoors to outdoors.

What renovations did you do?

How long did this project take?

Matthew Mckelligon Design

Matthew Mckelligon Design Project Duration: 6 month process Design: 2 months Construction: 4 months (includes landscaping)

What are some of the key materials you used?

Matthew Mckelligon Design

Matthew Mckelligon Design Colored concrete, decorative tile, and flagstone.

What was your biggest challenge and/or biggest takeaway working on this project?

Matthew Mckelligon Design

Matthew Mckelligon Design We were on a tight timeline. Also, the Pasadena safety department has a lot of restrictions when putting in an outdoor fireplace. Adding a bathroom is always difficult as well. There were some existing olive trees we didn't want to cut down, so we designed around them.

What is the style?

What's your favorite part of the new space?

Matthew Mckelligon Design

Matthew Mckelligon Design I just loved the pool. You know, the yard was not big and by maintaining those trees and having the grass between the flagstone it really stands out.

What did you or the homeowner splurge on?

Matthew Mckelligon Design

Matthew Mckelligon Design They splurged on tile. We used a Moroccan tile on the spa and around the pool. The upper kitchen was pretty expensive. They wanted burners and warming drawers, which can be pricy.

Any advice for staying on budget?

Matthew Mckelligon Design

Matthew Mckelligon Design The use of colored concrete bands with more of natural gray inside is strategically placed throughout. We used concrete in a decorative way, so that we didn't have to put tile everywhere. Retaining the olive trees saved a lot of money too.
