Thanks to my friends at Michaels for sponsoring this post!
Hey lovelies! How’s Back to School season treatin’ ya? I have been clothes shopping, shopping for supplies, backpack shopping, shoe shopping..all sorts of shopping! I can’t believe I will say this but…I’m all shopped out! When I’m not at the stores these days I’ve been organizing and preparing the family for the new school season. We recently did a small makeover in the boy’s room; added board and batten, painted the ceilings, and organized closets, drawers and everything in between. We donated a few pieces and about a bajillion books to Goodwill, and were left with a small pile of books that had no place to live now.

With school starting in a couple of weeks I knew that the small pile of books will multiply quickly. I came up with a simple, durable, and very cost effective solution, I made my own bookcase!
DIY Wood Crate Bookcase
I wanted a rustic look so I purchased some pre-made wood crates at Michaels and decided to use dark stain and a bold red and accessorize with galvanized metal. Perfect for the small nook in our boy’s room, but can be totally customized for a girl’s space too!
Materials:
4 Wood Crates: I went with 3 large, 1 small
Red spray paint {I used Krylon Cover Max in Banner Red}
Dark wood stain {I used a dark walnut stain}
Painters tape
Strong adhesive {E6000}
2-3 Clamps
{all materials are from Michaels, except the wood stain and clamps, which came from my garage!}
Directions:
I taped the crates on the outside and sprayed the insides in red.
Once that was completely dry I taped the edges of the painted boards and stained the rest of the crates.
That took several hours to dry thoroughly!
Next: I put it ‘together’! It took some time to figure out how I wanted to stack them, but I ultimately chose a stair case pattern. With so many different sizes of wood crates at Michaels, it was a tougher decision than it looks!
I applied the adhesive and pressed the crates together and kept it in place with clamps.
Tip: Apply the adhesive towards the middle of the crate so that it doesn’t bleed out as you apply the pressure.
This took several hours to cure, so I let it be until the next morning.
I added the books and accessorized with these awesome Galvanized Letters from Michaels‘ Raw Bar line. Remember I told you all about their Raw Bar line last month? I love it so much, I am seriously wanting just about everything they have to offer!
Repurposing a wood crate is a very simple way to display books, electronics, knick knacks, and more! You can also opt to hang the crates on the wall for more floor space–get creative!
