Do you remember making cereal necklaces as a kid? Or did you always beg your mom to buy you one of those candy necklaces at the store? Then I bet you and your kids will absolutely love making a Valentine Marshmallow Necklace! This is a sweet little something to keep, or give away to your special Valentine, and of course anything you can make, wear, and eat for a snack later on is a winner in my book!
My kids loved being able to create their own one of a kind Valentine Marshmallow Necklace and it was fun to watch them string cereal on a string, it took me back to their toddler years and an activity we did on many occasions. No matter what age your kids are my guess is they will love this activity too. And there are even lots of opportunities with this activity for teaching and practicing patterns, fine motor skills and counting.
And even I learned and tried something new. I made homemade marshmallows for the first time and can I just tell you they are AMAZING, kind of makes me wonder what took me so long! We followed Imperial Sugar’s Corn Syrup Free Marshmallows recipe and then played around with sprinkles and food safe spray paint to make our sweet little heart marshmallows. There are so many ways you can customize your homemade marshmallows for this necklace, for example you could add sprinkles like the Kids Kitchen Rainbow Marshmallow Necklace. Or you could use different shaped cookie cutters, get creative and have fun.
Here is what you’ll need to make our Valentine Marshmallow Necklace:
Supplies:
- Colored round cereal (such as Fruit Loops® or Fruity Cheerios®)
- Corn Syrup Free Marshmallows
- Yarn or thick string
- Plastic sewing needle
- Sprinkles
- Food Safe Color Spray
- White Candy Melts
- Prepare marshmallows according to recipe. Cut into heart shapes.
- Spray marshmallows with food safe color spray or melt candy melts and use to attach heart shaped sprinkles.
- Cut yarn and thread with plastic needle.
- Have children pick a pattern and repeat it a few times threading cereal through.
- Thread the marshmallow through. (The needle can get sticky, so have some wipes nearby.)
- Repeat the pattern on the other side. Tie a knot and wear around your neck.
Let the kiddos wear their new jewelry, but don’t expect for it to last long…these Valentine Marshmallow Necklaces are just too delicious to resist!
This would be a darling craft activity if you are planning a last minute Valentine’s Day party or play date, don’t you think?
