Today was a big day. One that I’ll be honest 6 years ago I would have never thought we would have successfully made it to. Today, my twins started Kindergarten and my oldest is heading into 2nd grade. I am so excited for them and know that they are going to do awesome and amazing things this year, but a tiny part of my little mama heart is sad to see them growing up so fast.
When I found out I was having twins 6 years ago I panicked. How on earth was I going to manage, I was barely doing a half way decent job with my oldest who was only 13 months at the time?!? The good news is we did survive and we managed. We’ve even managed to have some great moments along the way. And while most of the time I still feel like I’m only doing a half way decent job as a mom, there are a few things that I know my kids look forward to, appreciate and love. And our Back to School Breakfast is one of those. And this years breakfast was super special because for the first time all of my kids were going to be in big kid school, my babies are starting Kindergarten!
This is a special tradition we started when my oldest daughter started Pre-school and we’ve been doing it ever since. It’s one of those things I didn’t really think mattered that much, until a few nights ago at dinner my kids made the comment that they couldn’t wait for the first day of school and wondered what their back to school breakfast would be this year. And while these photos aren’t magazine worthy or the typical pretty & styled photos you see here (the lighting isn’t that great at 6:30 in the morning), I had to post it…well because it’s a tradition!
I rounded up some books and old drink crates and used printables from Dimpleprints to make our Bookworm Back to School Breakfast. I used our chalkboard placemats and set each place setting with a special note for each of my kids. Since I was going with a book theme I used the library card printables to write each of them a personal note for the year, which we will keep in our back to school time capsules.
I like to get them a small gift to start the year off, of course it had to be a book. I selected a book that fit each of their personalities, wrapped it and attached a bookmark.
My kids aren’t big breakfast people (they would eat cereal everyday if I let them) so I made mini pancakes, sausage and fruit for them to start the morning off right. They are usually too excited to even eat it all. I let them pick a bookworm to put in their lunch to help them “be smart.”
This is truly a tradition that I love. They get excited when they come down the stairs in the morning and see a fun little party set up just for them. It helps set the tone for what I hope our year will be like and it’s my way of sending them off into the big wide world with a little bit of cheer and love!
For my sweet little ones, I know that you are destined for great things and that you are going to have an amazing year…go and Be Awesome!
