“My father grew up in St. Paul, Minneapolis, and when I was little we would travel the long distance to visit my grandparents. St. Paul summers are hot, sticky and filled with mosquitos. I remember my grandparents had this classic Midwestern porch. It was a covered porch where the windows would be screened in the summer and glassed in the winter. Because they didn’t have air conditioning we found ourselves lounging on the porch during the day and sleeping out there at night. There was a slight breeze in the evening and the bugs were kept at bay. I especially loved it when there was a thunder and lightening storm, with rain that would pour down and splash through the window screens. Spending time on the covered porch felt special and unique – like the feeling you get when you go camping. We had nothing like it at home. For a kid it was a lovely place to spend the summer.”
